Usili Upma

Usili Upma is one of the tastiest & forgotten recipes of the south of India. It is one of the quickest tiffin menus that can be prepared in under 15 mins. You cannot find this recipe at any restaurant.

Ingredients

  • Rice - 1 cup
  • Moong Dal – ½ Cup
  • Mustard - 1 tsp
  • Urad Dal - 1 tsp
  • Chana Dal - 1 tsp
  • Red Chillies - 3
  • Cumin Seeds/ Jeera – 1 tsp
  • Curry Leaves - 1 tsp
  • Asafoetida/Kayam/Hing – 1/2 tsp
  • Salt – Per taste
  • Oil – 3 tsp
  • Water – 2.5 cups

Directions

  • Mix rice & dal together in a bowl. Rinse well, drain and keep aside.
  • In a pressure cooker add oil, then start adding mustard, Urad dal, Chana dal. Let it splutter.
  • Add Asafoetida/Kayam/Hing, curry leaves, and red chillies and sauté for about 10-15 secs.
  • Now add water and salt. Let it start boiling.
  • Once boiled, add the rice dal mixture and mix well.
  • Finally, add Cumin Seeds/ Jeera and mix well.
  • Cover and cook for about 3 whistles. Usili upma is ready. Serve with coconut chutney.


Points to be noted

  • Do not release the pressure. Let the pressure automatically settle down. Once the pressure settles down, open and gently mix the rice to retain the rice texture.
  • Do not keep mixing the rice. It will result in a mushy consistency.
