Godhumai Rava Idli - Broken Samba Wheat Idli - Samba Wheat Rava Idli

Samba Wheat Rava/Samba Godhumai Rava/ Broken Samba Wheat is rich in Iron, Magnesium, Vitamins & phosphorus. It has high fiber content, hence considered healthy. It's easy to digest, hence it is considered diabetic-friendly. It aids in weight loss. Generally, different recipes are made using Samba Godhumai rava. This Soft and steamed savory cake recipe is made by using Godhumai rava and urad dal and is a healthy option for breakfast.

Soaking Time: 2 hours

Fermenting time: 7 hours

Cooking time: 25-30 mins.

Yields: 12 Idlis




Ingredients

  • Samba Wheat Rava/ Samba Godhumai Rava/ Broken Samba Wheat -1 Cup 
  • Urad dal – 1/4 cup
  • Salt - per taste
  • Cumin Seeds powder/ Jeera powder – 1 Tsp.
  • Pepper powder – 1 Tsp.
  • Dry Ginger powder/ sukku powder– 1 Tsp.
  • Sesame Oil/Gingelly Oil - 1 Tbsp.

Directions

  • Add Samba Wheat Rava/ Samba Godhumai Rava/ Broken Samba Wheat to a mixing bowl and add just enough lukewarm water and let it rest for about 2 hours. 
  • In another bowl add urad dal and soak in water for about 30 mins.
  • After 30 mins, drain off the water and add the contents to a mixer grinder and grind as a smooth fluffy consistency batter. Transfer the batter to the soaked Godhumai rava bowl. Mix well.
  • Add salt and mix it again. Let it rest for about 7 hours.
  • After 7 hours, Check for the batter consistency, if it’s too thick or tight sprinkle a little quantity of water to form a perfect idli batter consistency. 
  • Now add Cumin Seeds powder/ Jeera powder, Pepper powder, and Dry Ginger powder/ sukku powder and mix well. 
  • Add a Tbsp. of Sesame Oil/Gingelly Oil and mix it again to form a perfect idli batter consistency. 
  • Now Grease the molds and pour a ladle of batter into each cavity. Tap it slightly.
  • Preheat the idly pot and gently place the idly plates and steam for about 15 mins.
  • After 15 mins of cooking, check whether the Idli is completely cooked, if not cook for a few more minutes. 
  • Healthy Godhumai Rava Idli is ready and it goes well with Idli milagai podi.

Points to be noted

While soaking samba rava just add a little quantity of water. If we add more water, the idli will turn kali-like while cooking.
